In December 1937, the "President Hoover," then considered the world's largest luxury liner, ran aground on a reef in the waters off Gongguan (Chaikou), Green Island, due to dense fog while en route from Keelung to the Philippines. The following morning, Green Island residents mobilized their sampans to rescue the crew and passengers, bringing them ashore and accommodating them in their homes, which earned widespread international praise. To express gratitude for the residents' courageous and righteous actions, the U.S. authorities donated funds through the Red Cross to construct the Green Island Lighthouse. The lighthouse was destroyed by air raids during World War II. The current lighthouse was rebuilt in 1948 by the government of the Republic of China.
