Lanyu was formed by submarine volcanic eruptions. The strata are mainly andesitic lava and basaltic agglomerate. After years of sea erosion and weathering, finally, hard rocks that are resistant to weathering remained, forming various interesting and peculiar rock landscapes. Many rocks with diverse shapes are scattered along the coast, and they were named by Han Chinese based on their appearance, such as Double Lions Rock, Battleship Rock, Helmet Rock, Elephant Trunk Rock, Dragon Head Rock, Old Man Rock, Mantou Rock, Red Head Rock, Crocodile Rock, Tank Rock, Maiden Rock, and Hen Rock, each vividly resembling its namesake. Nature miraculously sculpted the island's hard rocks as if playing with clay, turning Lanyu into an outdoor exhibition of large-scale stone sculptures.
