In 1915, the "Kashipanan Incident" broke out in the Zhuoxi mountain area, resulting in the deaths of several Japanese police officers. Feeling the difficulty in managing the indigenous people, the Japanese planned and constructed the Batongguan Traversing Trail across the Central Mountain Range, which was completed in 1921. It stretches 124.6 kilometers from Xinyi Township, Nantou County in the west to Yuli Town, Hualien County in the east. The eastern section from Nan'an to Walami (Warabi Station) is 13.6 kilometers long and is what is currently known as the "Walami Trail." Walami, in the Bunun language, originally means "to do something together." Its pronunciation is similar to the Japanese word for "fern," and the area is rich in fern species. Therefore, after the Japanese built a station here, they named it "Warabi Station." Walami Trail is located within Yushan National Park, about a 10-minute drive from Yuli City. Before hiking, you can visit the Nan'an Visitor Center to learn about the history of the Batongguan Traversing Trail and also visit Nan'an Waterfall. Currently, the 4.5 kilometers from the trailhead to Jiaxin do not require an application to hike, attracting a steady stream of visitors on weekends. The latter section from Jiaxin to Walami requires an entry permit for mountain areas and national parks, making it more suitable for overnight trips. It is a very popular hiking route.
