Mizhan Ancient Trail is located at kilometer 42 of Provincial Highway 193, next to Mizhan Elementary School, which was rebuilt into a rest area after its closure. The original Mizhan Ancient Trail was 7 kilometers long and served as an important route for transporting goods from the Shuilian area to Hualien from 1888 to 1979. Residents of the Shuilian area would hire porters to carry goods here for collection, and then transport them via ferry or oxcart along the Hualien River to Shoufeng and Hualien for sale. As most of the goods were rice, the name "Mizhan" (Rice Stack) arose from the way they were stacked one by one. Original Natural Ecology, Full of Surprises on the Ancient Trail After the opening of Provincial Highway 193 and Provincial Highway 11, transportation became much more convenient than before. Mizhan Ancient Trail gradually declined, retired from its duty, and was eventually forgotten by the world. Later, through the efforts of local community residents, it was transformed into a new hiking trail. The renovated Mizhan Ancient Trail is 2.1 kilometers long, rich in natural ecology, and has a serene environment, suitable for hiking enthusiasts to reminisce about the bustling scenes and hardships of the ancient trail in those days. Before entering Mizhan Ancient Trail, you will first see an exhibit composed of eight pillars, as well as a rice jar art installation beside it. The rice jar is inscribed with "Mizhan Ancient Trail" and a marker.
