Due to severe damage from multiple typhoons, parts of the trail were closed. After 3 years of reconstruction, the entire trail was reopened in July 2017, allowing visitors to catch a glimpse of the true beauty of Shakadang Trail during their holidays. Shakadang (Sgadan) is located in Fushi Village, Xiulin Township, Hualien County. Its name originates from the time when the Truku people established their settlement here and excavated molars. The local indigenous people believed these were historical traces left by their ancestors, hence they named this place Shakadang, which means "molar" in the Truku language. The Shakadang Trail originated during the Japanese colonial era when the Japanese, in order to build the Lishui Power Plant, carved a trail approximately 4.5 kilometers long and 1 meter wide along the cliffs of the Shakadang River. It was originally named "Mysterious Valley Trail" and was renamed Shakadang in 2001. In the past, the Shakadang River valley was the living space for the Truku people. The trail's signboards and explanations include Truku language, combining scenic ecology with humanistic beauty. Initially, Shakadang Trail only allowed visitors to walk to Wujianwu and then turn back. After repairs, visitors can now walk directly from the entrance to the end point, "Sanjianwu."
