To reach the western entrance of the Antong Trail, turn off Provincial Highway 30 at the 23.5 km mark at Fuxiang Bridge onto an industrial road. Follow the signs for 4.2 km to reach the trailhead. The Antong Trail starts from the Antong Hot Spring area in Yuli Township, Hualien County, and ends at Zhuhu Village, Changbin Township, Taitung County. It is the first trail to cross the Coastal Mountain Range between Hualien and Taitung. Along the way, there are not only rich ecological landscapes but also profound historical significance. Stepping onto the trail allows hikers to reminisce about past scenery and trace the footsteps of predecessors. A Century of History, Winding Paths The Antong Trail has a history of over a hundred years. During the Qing Dynasty, due to the policy of "Opening Mountains and Pacifying Savages," Commander Wu Guangliang opened this trail. This ancient path also became an intermarriage road for the Amis and Pingpu indigenous peoples during the Qing and Japanese eras, a missionary road for preachers entering the back mountains to spread Christianity, and a transportation route for residents to smuggle fish and tobacco to evade Japanese police searches. After the 1970s, with the opening of the Ruigang Highway, Dongfu Highway, and Yuchang Highway, the Antong Trail gradually lost its function of connecting the Coastal Mountain Range and fell into disrepair.
