Banxia Bay is the closest beach to Qingshui Cliff, located approximately at the 178.3K mark on the Suhua Highway from Hualien. Turn right at the intersection shown in the map below and go down the slope. The currently popular activities of kayaking and SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) offer many travelers an experience of exploring the vast blue Pacific Ocean, allowing for multi-layered, multi-angled, and closer views of one of Taiwan's top ten scenic spots – Qingshui Cliff. Legend has it that this magnificent and steep Qingshui Cliff is where Portuguese sailors, en route to Japan in 1542, passed by an island that didn't exist on any map. A sailor on board, gazing at the lush forests on the island, exclaimed "Ilha Formosa," meaning "beautiful island." This island was subsequently marked as FORMOSA in the Western world.
