Before harvest is the most beloved scene for most people, with plump grains of rice swaying in the sun with the sea breeze. Walking along the field ridges, looking towards the Coastal Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean in the distance, you feel as if you've become one with the scenery, reluctant to leave. The Kavalan people, who migrated south from Yilan, built a new settlement in Fengbin Township, Hualien, hence the village name Xinshe, which means "land of nurturing for all things" in Kavalan. The residents, accustomed to farming in Yilan, still longed for the taste of rice, so they opened up terraces on the coastal plateau and planted rice, creating the unique landscape of rice fields connecting to the sea, also known as sea rice terraces. Xinshe Sea Terraces, with one harvest per year, are the largest coastal terraces in Taiwan. The terraces are backed by the Coastal Mountain Range and border the coast. Looking towards the horizon, they appear to advance towards the sea in a jagged pattern. A wooden boardwalk is built at one end of the rice fields, allowing visitors to stroll and enjoy the scenery.
