Shimen Recreation Area is located in Fengbin Township, Hualien County, north of Shiti Ping, at the foot of Daqi Mountain and Maogong Mountain. The place name Shimen comes from a sea cave on the coast here, shaped like a door. Entering Shimen through the first tunnel, from Shimen Cave to the 'Man Conquers Nature' monument, the coastline reveals high mountains, steep cliffs, and gurgling streams, somewhat resembling the scenery of Taroko Gorge. The sea-eroded platforms, sea caves, and sea erosion gullies in Shimen are extremely well-developed, a replica of the geological landscape of Baxian Cave. A Shimen Nature Reserve is currently planned here. North of Shiti Ping, at the foot of Daqi Mountain and Maogong Mountain, there is a Shimen Beach with a large cave called Shimen Cave, a natural sea cave. The rock is black and not prone to collapse. Under long-term erosion by seawater, it presents steep and awe-inspiring cliffs. The cave has openings on all four sides. Depending on the angle of sunlight entering the cave, residents who have lived here for a long time can almost tell the exact time by it. Legend has it that in ancient times, a group of Amis people secretly gathered at Shimen to plan a surprise attack on a tribe at the mouth of the Xiuguluan River. They prepared glutinous rice cakes to celebrate their victory, but later the rice cakes turned into stones, forming coastal rocks that resemble rice cakes. In addition to unique geological landscapes, the coast of Shimen Cave is also a fishing spot, often frequented by locals for fishing or collecting seaweed.
