Jihala'ai. The Jilamidai community is located in Fengnan Village, the southernmost part of Fuli Township in Hualien County. The residents are mainly of the Amis tribe. Their original traditional crop was dryland rice. During the Qing Dynasty and Japanese colonial era, they came into contact with paddy rice cultivation techniques. The rice grown here is of excellent quality and was used as tribute rice for the Emperor during the Japanese colonial era. A small section of the Fudong Highway leading to Jihala'ai, due to its canyon terrain, is very similar to the scenery on the Central Cross-Island Highway, hence it is also known as "Little Tianxiang." North of the Jilamidai community is a settlement called Jihala'ai, with fields at an altitude of approximately 300 to 500 meters. Ancestors cultivated terraced fields that cascade down the terrain, and dug six irrigation canals to water the rice paddies. The tribal members continue to maintain the original landscape of the canals and natural ecology through the Amis traditional work exchange system. This way of life, characterized by harmonious interaction between people and land, not only led to Jihala'ai being designated as the "Jihala'ai Cultural Landscape Area" by the Hualien County Government in 2012, but also resulted in its selection as one of the "2016 Top 100 Green Destinations" in the 2016 international green tourism selection.
