The tunnel remains cool year-round and is a favored habitat for the Formosan leaf-nosed bat. To protect the ecosystem, only group reservations are currently accepted. -Attraction Features- The Liu Ming-chuan Tunnel (Shihchihling Tunnel) took 30 months to construct due to complex geological conditions, making it the most challenging section of Taiwan's first railway line between Keelung and Hsinchu. To open the tunnel as early as possible, both the north and south ends were excavated simultaneously. However, due to errors in excavation height, modifications were needed to horizontally connect the two ends. Visitors might notice this during their visit. The Liu Ming-chuan Tunnel (Shihchihling Tunnel) is 235 meters long, and with lights on, it creates a unique atmosphere. An interpretive sign at the north entrance explains the tunnel's historical background and the arduous excavation process. The south entrance features distinctive ripple projections, and above it are the words "Kuang Yu Tian Kai" (Vast Universe Opened) inscribed by Liu Ming-chuan. Notably, the ecological environment within the tunnel attracts Formosan leaf-nosed bats, especially during their breeding and rearing seasons from May to September. When visiting, masks should be worn, and flash photography avoided.
