The inscription on one of the cannon barrels is clearly visible, stating: "Autumn of the 12th year of Jiaqing, commissioned by the Fujian-Zhejiang Headquarters, the Governor of Fujian, cast by the Fujian Navy's Left Battalion, one cannon weighing one thousand catties." The origin of these ancient cannons is unknown, but they may be related to the naval commander Wang De-lu, who was from Chiayi, or they might have been originally placed at the East, South, and West city gates.
