In 1636 AD, during the ninth year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty, shortly after the Dutch East India Company subdued the Zhulian Mountain community, around the location of the county office after the Qing occupation, they stationed administrators and pastors to collect taxes from the Pingpu indigenous people and Han Chinese in the Zhulian Mountain area, and to spread Christianity among the indigenous people. Thus, this well was dug to provide water for daily life. During the Zheng dynasty, General Wu Zhiwu guarded and cultivated land in Zhulian Mountain, setting up a camp north of this well and renovating it. There are no records of repairs after the Qing occupation. In the 27th year of Qianlong, Wei Keyu, the magistrate of Zhulian, praised this well's water as sweet and pure, surpassing all others in Zhulian, and listed [Lan Well's Sweet Spring] as one of the Eight Sceneries of Zhulian. In the late Qing dynasty, Xu Deqin, a scholar from Chiayi, wrote about the well's spring water: 'Cleansing the heart's troubles like jade liquor, refreshing the tongue like fine nectar; for tea, stored in a silver pot; who will fetch water like snow?' It was considered the best in Zhulian. Historical records state: 'Red-Haired Well, to the left of the county office. Opened by the Dutch, hence the name. Six feet wide, about two zhang deep, the spring is sweeter and purer than other wells. Legend has it that residents who drink from this well are protected from epidemics.
