Its primary function was to build and repair various locomotives, passenger cars, and freight cars for the Alishan Forest Railway, boasting over a century of history. Since the Alishan railway began operation, the repair workshop has been the main hub for maintenance. Although the trains were originally purchased from the United States, the Beimen Repair Workshop employed one to two hundred people who were highly skilled in repair, modification, and manufacturing. Damaged parts were handcrafted, and external boilers and steam engines could also be produced in-house. The Alishan cypress train cars are also among the workshop's classic masterpieces. Many precious retired Alishan trains are currently preserved at the Beimen Repair Workshop. On August 23, 1993, a major fire broke out at the Beimen Repair Workshop, destroying the wooden factory buildings and some old trains. Today, some of the workshop buildings have been renovated, and a few of the more precious vehicles are preserved in the warehouse. To allow the public to visit this historically significant location, it was renamed Chiayi Railway Warehouse Park in 2005.
