Its exhibits focused on the natural landscape of Chiayi, such as its geology and fossils. The museum closed in 2018 for exhibition updates and was repositioned as Chiayi City's "City Museum." With the new mission of "Chiayi residents care about Chiayi affairs, and outsiders explore Chiayi City," it showcases the cultural characteristics of Chiayi City, as well as the history and life memories of its citizens, aspiring to be a museum belonging to the city and its people. The Chiayi Municipal Museum, redefined as a "City Museum," uses its new space and content to allow visitors to see the city of Chiayi in a new light. The first floor features the "Explore Chiayi Garden" children's hall, where children can experience the city's history through play. The second floor houses the "Looking Ahead to Zhuluo" permanent exhibition, which allows visitors to see Chiayi, see history, see the future, and see themselves through the exhibits. The third floor is the "Performing Arts on Architecture—Come Listen to the Temple Puppets Tell Stories" Jiao-Zhi Pottery Hall, presented in a museum-within-a-museum format, showcasing Chiayi's distinctive Jiao-Zhi pottery craft.
