Chiayi Arboretum. A Thriving Green Gathering - Established in the 41st year of Meiji (1908), the arboretum covers approximately 8.6 hectares and is located within Chiayi Park. A thriving green gathering - The arboretum was established in the 41st year of Meiji (1908) and covers approximately 8.6 hectares, located northeast of Chiayi Park. It was originally a nursery and experimental site for rubber saplings, later converted into a trial planting area for tropical economic tree species. It was managed as a mother tree garden and is affiliated with the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute of the Council of Agriculture. Because it is a forestry research institute and Chiayi is crossed by the Tropic of Cancer, various tropical and subtropical afforestation experiments were conducted. Early introductions included Brazilian rubber trees, Indian rosewood, blackboard trees, and economic tree species from various parts of Southeast Asia, such as mahogany, totaling over a hundred species. They were planted in clusters by species, without systematic zoning. Currently, there are 140 species of trees planted in the garden, belonging to 47 families and 107 genera, including the famous mahogany, Araucaria cunninghamii, blackboard tree, and Brazilian rubber tree. After a century, the trees in the park stand tall and lush, exuding a tranquil forest atmosphere in their natural simplicity.
