On This Day in History - [Shan Chi Pond] Taiwan's Timber Distribution Center ~ During the Japanese colonial era, the development of the Alishan timber industry led to a doubling of the population in Chiayi City and rapid prosperity, making it Taiwan's timber distribution center. The current location of the Municipal Cultural Center was once the largest [Shan Chi Pond] in East Asia. After the completion of the Alishan Forest Railway, a log storage pond was created for soaking timber, primarily cypress, hence it was also known as Cypress Pond. Trees were planted around the pond, creating dense shade, a gentle breeze carrying the scent of cypress, and the joy of fishing under the trees, akin to Tai Gong fishing in the Wei River, truly a recreational paradise. Today, the Chiayi City Cultural Affairs Bureau actively enriches its various cultural and artistic activities, aiming to inherit the ancient literary style of Zhuluo, create new culture for Chiayi, and ensure public participation in cultural construction, encouraging everyone to appreciate performing arts and enhance the quality of life in the Chiayi region.
