Chiayi Prison was completed and opened in the 11th year of Taisho (1922), named Tainan Prison Chiayi Branch. In 1924, it was renamed Tainan Prison Chiayi Branch. After 1945, it was called the Third Prison, First Branch. In 1947, it was renamed Taiwan Chiayi Prison. In March 1994, it was relocated to Lucao Township, and the old prison was converted into the Chiayi Prison Chiayi Branch. The internal facilities are well-preserved, and the complete hardware and artifacts can provide living materials for legal education and human rights evolution, as well as a showcase for the development of prison administration. The architectural style, spatial design, and construction methods of the Chiayi Branch are all distinctive. Its radial central control system, shaped like a fan, conforms to the ideal prototype for inmate confinement and control. The workshops and cells have high ceilings and are designed with different types of ventilation windows to meet the needs of ventilation, lighting, moisture control, and aerial patrols. The doors, windows, and wall panels are all made of Alishan cypress wood, with special requirements for sturdy, durable, and escape-proof professional construction, giving it preservation value.
