The Lantan Back Mountain Trail is located on the east side of Lantan Reservoir, adjacent to the Lantan Campus of National Chiayi University. The trail's altitude ranges between 80-150 meters. The main trail is approximately 3 kilometers long, with varied terrain despite its moderate elevation. It features flat, natural dirt paths, gravel trails, and wooden and stone staircases resembling a 156-step sky ladder. There are pavilions for rest, the sound of flowing water to listen to, and a romantic wonderland of mahogany trees. The trail is lush with foliage, and the sound of birdsong is constant, making it a delightful place for a forest bath. Along the trail, you will pass by Shanziding Mountain (elevation 141m) and Hongmaopi Mountain (elevation 150m). Hongmaopi Mountain is listed as one of Taiwan's Lesser Baiyue Peaks, offering the thrill of conquering a Baiyue without a long journey. The entire trail can be completed within 2 hours, making it an ideal trail for general public exercise, recreation, and for beginner hikers. The Lantan Back Mountain Trail is marked with orange-red mileage posts every 50 meters, indicating the latitude and longitude of the location, making it easy for hikers to navigate. There are also interpretive signs for common flora and fauna. Old trail names, passed down by word of mouth among hikers, have been intentionally preserved, such as Xin Leyuan, Hudui, Xiaogongyuan, Sunliao, and Houhuayuan. For instance, 'Hudui' (Lake Bottom) is said to be named because early trails had poor drainage, often leading to water accumulation after summer rains that would linger for a long time.
