Chiayi Station is the gateway to Chiayi City and is highly connected to its development. Since the opening of the main line railway, it has become the center of urban development due to its role as a regional transportation hub. The station building, as a major public building representing the area, holds historical significance. Zhongshan Road originates from the station and leads directly to Chiayi Park. Running east-west, it is known as the "Grand Avenue." The surrounding areas all use Chiayi Station as their main gateway, making it the geographical center of the city. During the 50 years of Japanese rule in Taiwan, the Taiwan main line railway was built to facilitate governance and exploit rich natural resources. Chiayi Station spurred the vigorous development of Chiayi City from its Qing Dynasty crossroads layout. The main line railway divided Chiayi City into two; the front station experienced booming commerce, with most commercial areas located on the southeast side of this district, while the vast northwest area behind the station saw minimal development. The platform canopies, processed and bent from I-beams identical to those used for the railway tracks, are quite unique. It was once a station that handled passenger transport, freight, sugar transport, and timber transport, with diverse functions and an important status.
