The fruit tree germplasm garden currently houses 49 families and approximately 800 varieties (strains), including several rare fruit trees. It serves multiple functions, including agricultural research, ecological education, and recreational sightseeing. The Agricultural Research Institute has three departments: Agronomy, Horticulture, and Plant Protection.
* Agronomy Department – Primarily focuses on research related to rice, sweet potatoes, and agricultural machinery improvement.
* Horticulture Department – Research scope includes the conservation and cultivation trials of tropical and subtropical fruit trees and flowers.
* Plant Protection Department – Mainly researches crop pest and disease control, as well as the development and utilization of beneficial microorganisms.
. A Brief History of the Chiayi Agricultural Research Institute was founded during the Japanese colonial era in the 1918 (the 7th year of the Taisho era). It was originally the Chiayi Branch of the Central Research Institute of the Governor-General of Taiwan. After World War II, the administrative system underwent several changes, and in July 1999, it was transferred to the Council of Agriculture. Located on the hill to the left of Chiayi Park, the Agricultural Research Institute was established in 1918, cultivating a wide variety of tropical crops, horticultural crops, and exotic flowers and plants.
