Experimental Forest. The Chiayi Experimental Sawmill was formerly the old prison dormitory cluster, which had been vacant and dilapidated for over a decade. The Chiayi Experimental Lumberyard was formerly the old prison dormitory complex, which had been vacant and dilapidated for over a decade. In recent years, the city government promoted the "Revisiting the Wooden City and Revitalizing Historical Sites Project." Two four-unit dormitory buildings, totaling eight units, were transformed into the Experimental Lumberyard, becoming Chiayi City's first experimental woodworking facility. It serves as a base for industry, government, and academia to experiment, exchange ideas, and cultivate woodworking talent, with the hope of showcasing and promoting Chiayi City's distinctive "Wooden City" character. The Experimental Lumberyard is located in the center of the old Chiayi prison dormitory complex. Two four-unit Japanese-style dormitories were redesigned and reassembled to create two distinct wooden construction and practical application parks, one in the north and one in the south. The north building preserves the structural remains and appearance of the Japanese-style dormitories, using structural design techniques to transform traditional wooden structures into new wooden spaces, and incorporating modern wooden seismic construction methods to enhance the support and seismic resistance of traditional wooden buildings. The south building is based on the Japanese-style dormitories, with new wooden building materials and new structural systems as its innovative features. The large-span structure makes the interior space of the south building spacious. The south building will function as a woodworking factory, while the north building will be used for research, teaching, and exhibition spaces, allowing the north and south buildings to showcase the integration and dialogue between old and new wooden construction techniques.
