Pingding Ancient Canal: Trekking a Century-Old Living Water Mountain Path. The Pingding Ancient Canal Hiking Trail is located in Pingdeng Village, Shilin District (formerly known as "Pingding"), and it is a path where one can deeply experience a century of human history and rich natural ecology. The core of this area is two ancient water canals named "Pingding" – the "Pingding Ancient Canal" and the "Pingding New Canal." Both canals are over 150 years old and were originally built for irrigation, drinking water, and water transportation. To this day, they remain an important source of daily water for the residents of Pingdeng Village. The trail begins at Lane 95, Pingjing Street. Upon entering, it feels like stepping into a time tunnel, with moss-covered stone steps lined with bamboo forests, exuding an ancient charm. Along the way, you will first pass Qingfeng Pavilion, which has a stamp station, and soon reach the water intake of the canal, engraved with the large red characters "Pingding Ancient Canal." A stone tablet beside it briefly narrates the history of the ancient canal's construction. The most captivating aspect of this trail is that it runs alongside the water canal for most of its length, eventually reaching the stone cave at the end of the canal, where clear streams and abundant aquatic life are a feast for the eyes. Ecological Wonders by the Canal: A Rich Biodiversity. The trail is situated between 300 and 500 meters above sea level, with the Neishuang Stream and Neiliao Stream flowing through it, nurturing dense forest vegetation, commonly including Alocasia, Machilus thunbergii, Stephania venosa, and bamboo. The abundant and clean water environment is home to diverse aquatic life.
