It was founded in the 16th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1890 AD) by Wang Binlin, the magistrate of Tamsui, who brought the spirit from Yongle Palace in Shanxi to Taiwan. The temple complex covers an area of tens of hectares, with ancient trees reaching to the sky and dense shade covering the sun. The entire temple has five main halls: the Pure Yang Palace, the Lingxiao Palace, the Daxiong Palace, the Dacheng Palace, and the Ksitigarbha Palace; along with attached halls such as the Tai Sui Hall, the Jade Emperor Hall, the Sanqing Hall, the Doumu Hall, the Shanxi Shengzun Palace, and the Yuantong Palace, totaling over ten structures. All are built along the mountain, magnificent and solemn. The architecture mostly uses sturdy stone materials and is covered with copper tiles, capable of lasting a thousand years. Long corridors connect the halls, with pavilions, ponds, terraces, and platforms. Flowers bloom year-round, the air is fresh, and the scenery is extremely charming. It is the most renowned Taoist monastery in Taiwan, hailed as the "Number One Spiritual Mountain under Heaven." Due to its frequent hosting of various large-scale religious activities and participation in international outreach, its reputation has spread far and wide, making it a world-class tourist attraction. The main deity worshipped at Zhinan Temple is Pure Yang Ancestor Lü Dongbin, whose official Taoist name is "Emperor Fuyou," but is popularly known as "Xian Gong" or "Lü Zu." Lü Zu was a person from the Tang Dynasty, well-read, who passed the imperial examination and served as a county magistrate. Because of his devout pursuit of the Tao, he encountered the immortal Master Zhongli Quan, the ancestor of Zhengyang, who enlightened him with the dream of a yellow millet, and tested him by turning stone into gold.
