The temple enshrines the hero of Fujian, Chen Yuanguang, and his generals Li Boyao and Ma Ren. Chen Yuanguang opened up the Zhangzhou region of Fujian in the late Tang Dynasty and is regarded as the guardian deity of the people of Zhangzhou, honored as 'Kai Zhang Sheng Wang'. Bishan Rock is one of the largest Kai Zhang Sheng Wang temples in Taiwan, with abundant incense offerings. Legend has it that a man named Huang from Zhangzhou Prefecture brought his family to Taiwan to cultivate the land. He saw this place as a rare auspicious site and left after hanging the incense he carried with him in a stone cave for worship. Later, bandits became rampant in the area below the mountain, raiding homes and causing suffering to the people. In 1751, as the bandits were about to attack the summit, they suddenly saw radiant light and heard war drums from the mountaintop. It turned out that the stone where the incense was hung had split into three: the middle piece was the Holy King, and the two side pieces were Generals Li and Ma. Surrounding stones rolled down the mountain, causing the bandits to abandon their weapons and flee. Nearby residents came to worship upon hearing the news, and indeed, the divine spirit bestowed blessings, leading to the construction of a small stone chamber temple. As the number of pilgrims gradually increased, the original stone chamber temple became insufficient for the large number of worshippers, so the main hall was built on the original site. Following several natural disasters, and after numerous renovations, with the efforts of many local people, believers, and the temple management committee, it was expanded to its current state. Bishan Rock is situated high above, overlooking not only the Taipei Basin but also, from the temple's front platform, the winding Tamsui River, Liyu Mountain, and terraced fields.
