Cicheng Temple, Shilin. Shilin Cixian Temple, also known as Shilin Mazu Temple, is dedicated to the Goddess Mazu and is located within the famous Shilin Night Market. Shilin Cixian Temple, also known as Shilin Mazu Temple, is dedicated to the Holy Mother in Heaven and is located within the famous Shilin Night Market. The predecessor of Cixian Temple was a temple built in 1796 (the first year of Emperor Jiaqing's reign in the Qing Dynasty) on land donated by owner He Jintang, and was then called Tianhou Temple. In 1859 (the ninth year of Emperor Xianfeng's reign), a conflict broke out between Zhangzhou and Quanzhou factions, and Zhilan Street was affected and burned down, with Tianhou Temple also being destroyed in the fire. After the old street was tragically burned, gentry member Pan Yongqing strongly advocated relocating and building a new street. Most residents agreed, so they chose to build a new street in the area of Xiashulin, which is today's Shilin New Street. At the same time, the center of the street was planned as the temple site, which is the current location of Cixian Temple. Cixian Temple is a temple with a two-hall, two-corridor, and two-wing layout, forming a total of five courtyards. The two halls are connected by a "guoshui" corridor to the wings, making it a typical palace-style Southern Fujianese temple. The roof of the first hall, the Sanchuan Hall, is a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof with upturned eaves, also known as the "Taizi Lou" style. The single coiled dragon octagonal pillars of the central gate in the main hall were built during the Guangxu period, and the qilin reliefs on the left and right are works from 1828. The painted palace maids and door gods, Yuchi Gong and Qin Shubao, on the doors are exquisitely crafted and are the works of the important modern craftsman Chen Yufeng. Next to the main hall is a stone relief depicting the old Shilin street, allowing people to imagine the appearance of Shilin's streets in the past.
