Xiao Nan Men (Little South Gate) - Chongxi Gate. Taipei City was one of the last walled cities built during the Qing Dynasty. Taipei City was one of the last walled cities built during the Qing Dynasty. The city walls from that era have all crumbled, leaving only a few gate ruins as witnesses to history. The Taipei City wall was 4 meters wide and 5 meters high, encircling approximately 4 kilometers, making it a very sturdy city. Most traditional Chinese walled cities have four gates, but Taipei City had five. It is said that the wealthy Lin Ben Yuan family of Banqiao at the time specially donated funds for its construction to facilitate access. Although this legend has not been verified, Xiao Nan Men is indeed a very special example among Chinese walled city architecture. Unfortunately, although it, along with the East Gate and South Gate, escaped destruction by the Japanese, it was later rebuilt into a Northern Chinese palace-style gate tower after the Kuomintang government came to Taiwan. Only the base of the gate remains in its original appearance from that time, continuing to guard Taipei.
