Ms. Tsai Jui-yue can be called the pioneer of modern dance in Taiwan, tirelessly promoting modern dance. Born in Tainan City in 1921, she traveled to Japan at the age of 16 to study under Mr. Ishii Baku, known as the father of modern dance, laying the foundation for her dance career. After returning to Taiwan, she dedicated all her energy to dance, introducing the concept of modern dance to Taiwan. On this land, Ms. Tsai created over 500 modern dance works, such as "Song of India" and "We Love Our Taiwan," and integrated diverse dance forms, including ballet, folk dance, and Taiwanese traditional dances, earning her the title "Mother of Modern Dance in Taiwan." The Tsai Jui-yue Dance Research Institute is a historic building, originally a dormitory for civil servants during the Japanese colonial era. At that time, various grades of dormitories were built in the Taipei urban area, mostly in the style of wooden Japanese houses. In 1920, dozens of semi-detached wooden dormitories were constructed along Zhongshan North Road, and the Tsai Jui-yue Dance Research Institute was built then. Judging by its layout, it was a dormitory for Japanese junior officials. In 1953, it became the home, choreography, and practice studio of Ms. Tsai Jui-yue, the mother of modern dance in Taiwan, and later evolved into a dance studio. Although it was once destroyed by fire, in 1999, historical scholars and experts unanimously recognized this site as the birthplace of modern dance in Taiwan.
