The Yifangju Chen family originally hailed from Anxi County, Quanzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province. During the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, their ancestors crossed the sea to Taiwan to cultivate the land. They had prior residences, but it wasn't until the early years of the Guangxu reign that they invested heavily to build Yifangju. This three-section, two-wing traditional house is a typical example of old houses in the Taipei Basin. The main hall features a sunken-arch entrance. The walls of the main hall and the wing rooms are made of sturdy, thick brick and stone. There are fewer openings for doors and windows. Additionally, a two-story gun emplacement was built on the outer wing for defense against bandits. Furthermore, many of its windows are made of stone, sourced from the sandstone produced in Taipei, which also exhibits local characteristics. The inscription above the main entrance reads "Yifangju," dated Bingzi year, which is estimated to be the second year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty. With the rapid development of Taipei in modern times, traditional houses from the Qing Dynasty like Yifangju are becoming increasingly rare, serving as historical witnesses to the pioneering development of Taipei.
