Today, only a few high walls on the north and south sides remain, but they still evoke a somber and oppressive atmosphere. The Taipei Prison had a radial floor plan, which was a trend in prisons worldwide in the 19th century. It was surrounded by high walls, and most of the stones used were taken from the Taipei Prefecture City walls demolished in the 1910s. These were mainly andesite and Qili'an stone, which were materials transported from quarries near Dazhi and Neihu during the Guangxu era of the late Qing Dynasty to build the Taipei Prefecture City. At that time, they were first transported from the mountains to the Keelung River bank, and then by boat via the Tamsui River to the Hegoutou pier. Even today, it possesses profound historic value.
