In the early morning of February 5, 2013, it was suddenly devastated by a fire. In 2015, Ms. Shu-Chen Kuo, Chairperson of Le Chi Construction, acquired the ROT (Rehabilitate, Operate, Transfer) project from National Taiwan University. The restoration was completed after nearly three and a half years. As nearby residents referred to this complex as "The Courtyard," it was named "The Courtyard" upon its reopening after restoration. Historical Background of the Public Dormitory Architecture The Courtyard was built during the Japanese colonial period. According to the old building plaque, the architecture was designed and contracted by the Accounting Section of the Governor-General of Taiwan's Office, with Tsukamoto Yoshinosuke as the constructor. The "Jōtōshiki" (ridgepole raising ceremony) was held on March 8, Showa 6 (1931). There are two theories regarding the historical background of the National Taiwan University Public Dormitory. The first, according to the official records on the Cultural Heritage Information Network of the Ministry of Culture, states that in its early days, it belonged to the Japanese Navy's "Suikōsha," which served as a "guesthouse" or "club" for naval officers. The second theory suggests it was official housing for single faculty members of Taihoku Imperial University during the Japanese colonial period. Whether it was "Suikōsha" or "single official housing," there is currently no primary source material to corroborate its original purpose and function, adding to the mystery and historical depth of the National Taiwan University Public Dormitory.
