The dog-tooth terrain is formed by the tilting and uplift of strata due to geological compression. Under the erosion of the Beishi River, the fragile shale collapses, leaving behind sawtooth-shaped sandstone, hence the name resembling a dog's teeth. With the construction of the Feitsui Reservoir upstream of the Beishi River, much of the dog-tooth terrain is submerged.
