This artillery fort, Hobe Fort (Chinese mini-lesson: 礮 is an ancient character for 砲, pronounced pào), was built under the direction of Liu Ming-chuan, Taiwan's first governor at the time. It was once a military stronghold guarding Tamsui Port. Although the large cannons are no longer there, the outer walls and remaining cannon emplacements still show its important status from a century ago. It was officially designated a national second-class historical monument in 1985. Its commanding geographical position and sturdy building materials created a magnificent fort, making it the best military fortress for 19th-century warfare and garrisoning, and an important coastal defense facility for Taiwan's modernization during the Qing Dynasty.
