Tamsui Church. Tamsui is the base for the development of the Presbyterian Church in Northern Taiwan, and the greatest contributor is Reverend George Leslie Mackay of the Canadian Presbyterian Church. After Dr. Mackay arrived in Tamsui on March 9, 1872, he actively began his missionary work. He also learned the Hokkien language and local culture. The house he originally rented served not only as a hospital but also as a place for evangelism. In 1873, he baptized the first group of believers. As there was no church building, services were held only in the rented residence. To expand his mission, he often led students to various places to preach and establish churches, entrusting them to his students. Despite many setbacks, he was able to spread the church throughout Northern Taiwan. The first church in the north was established in Wugu, and the Tamsui Church was later converted from the doctor's dormitory of the Mackay Clinic. It is now a county-designated historic site.
