At its peak, the camp held over a thousand WWII POWs from Allied nations including Britain, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States. During their imprisonment, these Allied POWs were forced to work in copper mines. Due to the less-than-ideal living and working conditions, strict management, insufficient medical care, and unfamiliar environment, many POWs lost their lives here. It seems to echo the lingering suffering of the POWs from that era, but it also emphasizes the profound significance of peace for the world.
