The source of their income was growing the indigo plant (Da Qing) and selling the indigo dye to mainland China. Da Qing, commonly known as Isatis tinctoria, is a perennial plant of the Acanthaceae family. Because it is often cultivated in mountainous areas, it is colloquially known as "mountain blue." It is also called "Da Qing" because it is primarily used as a dye for blue cloth. It flowers from November to February each year, with purple blossoms. It prefers warm and humid conditions, and Pingxi's climate is ideal for the growth of the indigo plant.
