During its peak, thousands of miners worked here, supporting their families and driving the nation's economic development. This era, reliant on coal, is undoubtedly Houtong's most significant past. To preserve the historical memory of coal mining in Taiwan, retired miners, through their own efforts, established the Houtong Coal Mine Ecological Park in 2019 at the original site of the Ruisan Coal Mine Office. Using the silhouette of miners as its logo, it guides visitors back to Houtong's "black gold" era.
