Located in an alley behind Yonghe Hospital, the Hsiao Family Arch of Chastity and Filial Piety, due to its long history and changes in the surrounding environment with many residential buildings, presents a unique sight where the ancient archway blends with the surrounding houses. The Hsiao Family Arch of Chastity and Filial Piety is the only single-room, two-pillar, two-story archway of its kind in Taiwan, and also the smallest stone archway in terms of layout. The characters for "Chastity" and "Filial Piety" are inscribed on the arch. Initially, it was built to commend women for their loyalty, filial piety, chastity, and virtue. Women who were widowed before the age of 30 and remained chaste and did not remarry after the age of 50 were eligible for commendation. The local government would grant thirty taels of silver, which the individual or their family could use to build an archway in their village. The Hsiao Family Arch of Chastity and Filial Piety is the archway commemorating the virtuous deeds of the Hsiao family and is currently the only surviving Arch of Chastity and Filial Piety in Tainan City.
