The coast near Tainan, from the Dutch period through the Zheng dynasty to the Daoguang 2nd year of the Qing Dynasty, for about 200 years, Anping was an island not connected to the main island of Taiwan. The sea between Anping and the Tainan coast was then called Taijiang Bay, which could accommodate large ancient ships with a depth of about 5-6 meters. Anping was one of a series of sandbars, originally named Yi Kun Shen. South of Anping to near the mouth of the Erren River, there were six other sandbars, named from Yi Kun Shen to Qi Kun Shen. North of Anping, across a strait, it faced the Beixianwei sandbar. This strait was the main passage into Taijiang Bay, guarded by Fort Zeelandia (Anping Fort) built by the Dutch. North of Beixianwei, across Luermen, it faced the Xixinggang sandbar, also a key entrance to Taijiang Bay.
