Hayashi Department Store. June 30, 2013, marked the day the Hayashi Department Store, a significant old building in Tainan, was restored and reopened to the public. The queues on that day started as early as 7 AM and continued without interruption until the afternoon. Visitors happily lined up, eager to enter the "Five-Story Building" that first opened in 1932 during the Japanese colonial era. It featured the most advanced elevator of its time. The area around Zhongzheng Road was then known as Suehirocho, a very bustling district in early Tainan. However, after the Japanese colonial era ended and the operators returned to Japan, the Hayashi Department Store fell into obscurity. After nearly half a century, the people of Tainan had forgotten its former glory. A year after its restoration, on June 14, 2014, the Hayashi Department Store was reborn as a department store in the ancient capital. On that day, a lively parade in Japanese colonial-era style took place on Zhongzheng Road, appearing as if all of Tainan had come out for the celebration.
