Built in 1937, the Wang Jishi Western-style House was the most luxurious residence in Anping at the time, standing out like a crane among chickens in a sea of traditional Min-style houses. The house got its name because the owner's name was Wang Jishi. Mr. Wang Jishi became wealthy by undertaking transportation work for the Japanese salt company during the Japanese colonial period and subsequently built this Western-style house to live in. The two-story building was the tallest structure in Anping at the time. Later, when World War II broke out, to prevent the conspicuous appearance of the house from becoming a target for Allied bombing, the Japanese painted the house black with asphalt. Faint traces of the original paint can still be seen today. Next to the house are special stone chairs, which were originally ballast stones from ships that navigated the Black-Ditch. Ballast stones are commonly seen in Anping; some are used as steps or treads, while others are casually placed in courtyards, allowing visitors to rest when they get tired. Descendants of the Wang family still reside in the Wang Jishi Western-style House today, so visitors are reminded to be mindful and not disturb their living environment when visiting.
