Built in 1937, the Wang Jishi Western-style House was the most luxurious residence in Anping at the time, standing out like a crane among chickens amidst the surrounding Minnan-style flat houses. The reason for this name is that the owner's name was Wang Jishi. Mr. Wang Jishi became wealthy during the Japanese colonial period by undertaking transportation work for the Japanese salt company and subsequently built this Western-style house to live in. The two-story building was the tallest structure in Anping at the time. Later, when World War II broke out, to prevent the conspicuous appearance of the Western-style house from becoming a target for Allied bombing, the Japanese painted the house black with asphalt. Faint traces of the original paint can still be seen today. Next to the Western-style house are special stone chairs, which are ballast stones from ships that used to travel the Black-Ditch. Ballast stones like these are common in Anping; some are used as steps or treads, while others are casually placed in courtyards, allowing visitors to rest when tired. Descendants of the Wang family still reside in the Wang Jishi Western-style House today, so visitors are reminded to be mindful not to disturb their living environment when visiting.
