In 1862, an earthquake caused severe damage to Chaotian Temple, and a spider spirit took advantage of this opportunity to cause chaos, leading to unrestrained behavior among local women, which greatly troubled the residents. Later, under the guidance of the Mazu goddess of Chaotian Temple, the temple was rebuilt and began to conduct processions to suppress the chaos, thus resolving the disturbance. This procession later became the well-known "Damoushang Shibaba Rao" (Eighteen Stirrings of Damoushang) procession. Additionally, there is a legend of Mazu performing a miracle during World War II. At that time, Xinhua had a small airport, and during an Allied bombing raid, an image of Mazu appeared in the sky, catching the bombs and throwing them into uninhabited mountainous areas. This is still a story of Mazu's compassion passed down by elders. The temple still houses many precious Qing Dynasty stone tablets and plaques. Most notably, the reconstruction inscription from 1927 includes the names of Japanese donors, indicating the temple's significant status in Xinhua.
