Dunyuan Temple. Although the name Dunyuan Temple may sound unfamiliar, it is more commonly known as Guiren Confucian Temple. Although the name Dunyuan Temple may sound unfamiliar, it is more commonly known as Guiren Confucian Temple. This is the only temple in the former Tainan County that enshrines Confucius, and it gets its name from the Dunyuan Society. The Dunyuan Society was a Chinese studies association founded in 1883 by scholars in the Xinfeng District of Tainan County. It wasn't until 1927 that members, poets, and local gentry jointly raised funds to build the temple and cast a bronze statue of Confucius for worship. It is a privately owned Confucian temple, not one built by the government. The temple features a classical swallowtail-style architecture, with many towering old longan trees within its grounds. Due to its suburban location, it is not crowded with tourists, making it a very tranquil place to quietly commune with the Supreme Sage and Teacher. To this day, the Confucius Birthday ceremony is held annually, with the five district offices within the Xinfeng District (Longqi, Guanmiao, Guiren, Rende, and Yongkang) taking turns to host the ceremony. This is a unique characteristic of Dunyuan Temple, a privately owned temple where the government presides over the main sacrificial rites.
