Many old ports in Taiwan have Matsu temples built to protect the maritime safety of fishermen and merchants, serving as the spiritual pillar for those who venture out to sea. This is evidenced by the numerous Matsu statues preserved within the temple, all of which were brought by guilds such as the Qing Dynasty sugar merchants, general goods merchants, textile merchants, and oil and water merchants. Hu Bi Palace has an ancient and simple appearance, and its decorative arts are the works of renowned craftsmen. The stone carvings are by the Chen family of Dadaocheng, Taipei; the wood carvings by Chen Renshui of Tianzhong; the Koji (jian nian) by Yeh Chin-yi of the Yeh family of Anping; and the paintings include four murals by Pan Lishui.
