In 1915, Japan's rule over Taiwan entered its 20th year. Deep resentment had been growing due to unjust taxation and legal systems, as well as an all-encompassing police authority. Consequently, Yu Ching-fang and others raised funds for an anti-Japanese resistance under the guise of renovating the Xilai Temple. That summer, a large-scale armed anti-Japanese incident, the biggest since Japan's rule began, erupted in the Tapani (Jiaobani) area. Hundreds died in the conflict, and thousands perished. Those arrested and sentenced for their involvement in this incident were spread throughout Taiwan. This historical event is known as the Tapani Incident, also called the Xilai Temple Incident or the Yu Ching-fang Incident.
