The National Science Council of the Executive Yuan commissioned the Academia Sinica and the National Museum of Prehistory to conduct investigations and excavations. To date, over 58 sites have been discovered, with prehistoric cultures dating back as early as approximately 5,000 years ago and as recent as over 300 years ago. This area boasts the highest density of archaeological sites, the most complete cultural stratigraphy, and the largest excavation area in Taiwan. To preserve, research, and exhibit the results of rescue excavations necessitated by development, through the concerted efforts of various parties, the construction plan for the National Museum of Prehistory Southern Science Park Archaeological Museum was finally completed, covering an area of approximately 2.42 hectares with a floor area of 19,000 square meters.
