Saint Therese of the Child Jesus Church, Zuoying was founded in 1932 by Father Anselm van den Berg of the Dominican Order. It was the Zuoying branch of the Sacred Heart of Mary Church in Kaohsiung. Ten years later, with the concerted efforts of all parishioners, a wooden factory building was purchased with meager funds. The timber was dismantled and rebuilt into a small chapel with wooden plank walls, named "Saint Therese of the Child Jesus Church," located at Beizitou, Zuoying. As Taiwan gradually became more socially stable and tourists flocked to Zuoying daily, in order to spread the Gospel of Christ and promote the Little Way of Saint Therese, groundbreaking took place on Easter 1976. A statue of Saint Therese was erected, and it was honored by Pope Paul VI as the "Southern Pilgrimage Site of Saint Therese." The simple white church is adorned with stained glass windows and carvings of roses, which Saint Therese loved, adding a gentle and tranquil atmosphere to this serene holy site.
