The Duona community was formed by the convergence of several small settlements and is currently the most complete Rukai traditional cultural preservation area within the Maolin District. Traditional stone houses, Rukai totems, and stone carvings can be seen everywhere. In the mountains behind the settlement lies a wide, flat terrace where a unique black rice is cultivated. Every year, the Black Rice Festival, "Tapakarhavae," is held here to commemorate the blessings of heaven and pray for a bountiful harvest in the coming year.
