During World War II and the Chinese Civil War, 60,000 young Taiwanese left their homes to go to war, with over 30,000 Taiwanese soldiers killed overseas and 15,000 missing. After the Kuomintang army took over Taiwan, more than 15,000 troops went to mainland China to participate in the Chinese Civil War and the Korean War, with an estimated death toll of over 10,000. Only a few hundred successfully returned to Taiwan, and some hundreds were stranded in mainland China, while others were captured and became members of the People's Liberation Army. To commemorate this important historical event, through the efforts of the ROC Association of Taiwanese Veterans and their Descendants and Mr. Xu Zhaorong's lifelong advocacy, the War and Peace Memorial Park was finally completed and opened on May 20, 2009.
